Learn to Sail

The Lake Canyon Yacht Club offers sailing classes for all levels from beginning to well seasoned sailors. With our emphasis on competitive sailing, we also offer classes in race management. The dates for 2010 are listed below.

Intro to Race Management

Saturday, February 6th - 9AM - Noon

The purpose of the Race Management Seminar is to familiarize all interested persons with the duties required to conduct a proper sailboat race. Each of the duties will be outlined, as will the flags, sound signals, and the sequential timing of each step. You will be introduced to many of the variables and unforeen events the R.C. must consider when setting up a race course. Our club is interested in developing a cadre of sailors to maintain our high quality of Race Management. Visitors to L.C.Y.C. appreciate our efforts to provide the best possible race experience.

Intro to Sailing

Saturday & Sunday, February 20 & 21 - 9AM - 4PM
Class is limited to 30 people

A two day course with topics including marine terms, nomenclature of boats, basic knot tying, what makes a sailboat go, points of sail, departing and returning from a dock, right of way rules, safety, owner responsibilities, and a 5 hour sail on club members' boats. 30 students maximum.

Intro to Racing

Saturday & Sunday, February 27 & 28 - 9AM - 4PM
Class is limited to 30 people

Must have completed Intro to Sailing, or have prior sailing experience. Subjects include course types, scoring systems, basic racing rules, tactics for starting, racing upwind, racing downwind, race committee procedures for conducting races, and a 5 hour period doing practice races on members' boats. 30 student maximum.

Sailing Strategies Racing Seminar

  • Saturday, March 6 - 9AM - 4PM at LCYC
  • 5 hours on the water training & 1.5 hours onshore critique & discussion
  • Register online at SailingStrategies.com.
  • Early registration before February 25th, is $75. Late registration is $90.
  • Registration includes lunch and beverages.

Consisting of on and off the water sessions, Sailing Strategies Seminars cover key topics and techniques to get sailors comfortable on the race course and focused on winning. Participants will be coached and evaluated during on the water drills. To insure that all participants get individual attention, Kelly Gough, Greta Mittman and Michael Mittman will be on hand for the entire session. Off the water sessions will have discussions and demonstrations of key techniques. Topics covered will be:

  • Upwind - Sail Trim Finding & Maintaining a Lane Shifting Gears Weight Placement Teamwork
  • Downwind - Spinnaker Trim No Spinnaker Situations Weight Placement Teamwork
  • Basic Mark Rounding Techniques
  • Approach & Set-up Teamwork

Adapted Sailing

Started in 2005, purpose of Adapted Sailing is to provide an opportunity for people with physical and/or mental disabilities to go sailing on club members' boats. Four dates are scheduled each year. LCYC offers this program in "partnership" with San Antonio Parks and Recreation's Therapeutic Sports Department, through which we receive most of our guests. From time to time we have also hosted wounded servicemen in varying stages of rehabilitation. The program provides a brief orientation of sailing, lunch for our guests followed by 2-3 hours of sailing. Groups are limited to 25.

  • Adapted Sailing I - Saturday, May 14 - 11AM - 3PM
  • Adapted Sailing II - Saturday, June 26 - 11AM - 3PM
  • Adapted Sailing III - Saturday, August 21 - 11AM - 3PM
  • Adapted Sailing IV - Saturday, September 18 - 11AM - 3PM

Youth Sailing

Conducted during the last two weekends of May, the purpose of these classes is to teach children from ages 7 to 18 how to sail. Boats used include Sunfish and Optimists. The course includes classroom sessions on basic sailing concepts, knot tying, safety, and sailing right of way rules. On the water activities include rigging a sailboat, capsizing and righting a sailboat, basic sail adjustments, steering, tacking, jibing and how to make a safe docking. The emphasis is on safety and avoiding collisions. Maximum of 30 students.


Must have completed the Youth Sailing Classes, or have prior sailing experience. Usually held during the last week of June, Monday through Friday. Intensive racing instruction with classes on rules, right-of-way, safety, and racing tactics. Daily racing and after-race critiques. Maximum of 20 students.
